MS Teams Site Created for DCCFA Members to Discuss Proposed Resolutions and Amendments in Advance of Feb. 5 Special Convention - NEW INFORMATION ADDED

DCCFA Secretary Jennifer Hudson Allen has created a site within Dallas College MS Teams, for DCCFA members to discuss the proposed resolutions, bylaws amendments, and constitutional amendments, to be considered for a vote at the special DCCFA Convention on Friday, Feb. 5, 2021.

This is the direct link to the MS Teams site: https://teams.microsoft.com/l/team/19%3a14b9961759114acc9a8cd3b34b66d6e5%40thread.tacv2/conversations?groupId=29bd6134-fb5d-47d4-8424-2ec0b0a20c8b&tenantId=d67e5453-732f-4adc-94a4-4888f2d97d5d

Only dues-paying DCCFA members have access to this MS Teams site. If you are a dues-paying member of DCCFA and do not have access, please notify your campus faculty association president.

EDIT AS OF 2:30 P.M. TUESDAY, JAN. 26: NOTE THAT AN UPDATED PDF DOCUMENT OF THE RESOLUTIONS HAS BEEN POSTED TO THIS DCCFA SHAREPOINT FOLDER. THIS IS THE NAME OF THE FILE:

1-26-2021 DCCFA Proposed Amendments and Resolutions.pdf

The following ground rules for discussion have been posted:

1. Stay on topic: We are discussing the convention resolutions and changes only. Nothing else (administration, politics, religion, moon phases, job status, etc.) will be discussed.

2. Be nice: We will discuss as colleagues, and should be able to agree to disagree with respect for each other. Anyone who is rude or inappropriate will be removed, regardless of their status as a dues paying member.

3. Be cool: We are all different people, trying to survive in a pandemic, teaching online, caring for our families, and trying to carve out time for ourselves. Be aware that what might sound okay to you may be wildly offensive to others.

In addition, a series of Resolution Round Tables have been scheduled for the days and times below. These sessions will hopefully be recorded so members can watch them if needed. Each session will be 90 minutes, and we may not need all the time allotted.

The authors of the resolutions are encouraged to attend the corresponding session to answer questions.

New Dallas College Curriculum Dean Reports that Faculty Do NOT Need to Conduct Core Objective Assessment in Spring 2021

Dr. Jannette Flores, the new Dean of Curriculum, Assessment, and Portfolio Management (reporting to Greg Morris within Academic Services) on Dec. 16 reported to the Faculty Council and Vice Provosts, that faculty do NOT have to collect core objective assessment data in Spring 2021.

Instead, Dr. Flores said that the Spring 2021 semester would be used for faculty to collaborate with her office to develop assessment plans that will continue to satisfy SACS, THECB, and any applicable program industry accreditation requirements, but as One College instead of seven.

As part of this initiative, faculty will be asked to participate in professional development on core objective and learning outcomes assessment in Spring 2021, again to make sure we are assessing and using data as a single institution when core objective assessment resumes in Fall 2021.

Again, we do not have to do core objective assessment in Spring 2021.

Director of Academic Scheduling Answers Faculty Council Questions Regarding Schedule Preference Survey

Members of the Faculty Council posted these questions to Nicole Mabine, Director of Academic Scheduling, regarding the Schedule Preference Survey. Her answers follow each question.

Q: Time options do not include options for longer time period courses: e.g., studio art classes which are normally 3 hours per class meeting (six hours for one-day/week scheduled classes). How does faculty address this issue?

A: The survey includes time blocks and not actual course lengths. The courses are assigned the traditional blocks. We can work on the language being a bit more clear.

Q. The times for classes overlap, which seems to be a typo. What should faculty do?

A. Not all faculty teach in the same number of hours. We are providing variation as some faculty teach 1hour courses, 2 hour courses, and so on. There is literally no way to account for all of the variation on a single form.

Q. The survey doesn't ask if the instructor wants or is available for Summer I or Summer II, just Summer in general.  Why?

A. Please add the term information to the comments.

Q. Can we request just one course five times, or do we have to put down five different courses?

A. Put down your preference. If that is your choice to teach the same course 5 different times I think that is important context.

Q. We cannot select more than one course prefix for primary area of teaching. Why? Some people split their contract between two prefixes.

A. You may select other and add all your courses manually.

Q. Are adjuncts going to be filling out this form as well? Did they receive the email?

A. I have adjuncts emailing me questions. This form has gone out in email, Floyd’s update, and through marketing. Please feel free to forward.

Q. This question makes no sense at all: By the start of the following semesters will you have 0-5 years of experience teaching in higher education? Please select "Yes" if you will have in between 0 and 5 years of experience in higher education e.g., if you will have 5 years and 1 day please select "No.”

A. I just need to know if a faculty has had 5 years or less experience or if a faculty has more than 5 years’ experience.

Q. Are we scheduling under the assumption of face-to-face instruction for Fall 2021?

A. Yes

Q. How does DC and ECHS fit into this or does it?

A. It does not as it is a manual process with educational partnerships. If a faculty should choose a section, please add that in the comments.

Q. There are some faculty who will teach whatever, whenever, and wherever they are asked to do so.  They simply want to maximize their extra service potential.  How do they "say this"?  That is my question.  How do they communicate the idea that the most important issue to them is the maximum amount of extra service, not necessarily what, or where, or even when they teach?

A. Please add this comment to the comment area. Its not about how the schedule team will read this, it is about how the faculty chair/dean will read it.

Q. Also can you help me understand why we are asking faculty for preferences for FA2021 this far out?

A. We have a schedule published in April. We need teaching assignments to be made so that adoption can be appropriately assigned. Adoptions will occur in February, Follett will begin the work of validating ISBN/SKU and associating the materials with the appropriate course, and we need those materials to be associated with the courses before the schedule goes live in April.

Q. Could we use this time to help tighten the form even further and then send it out again in early spring?

A. I cannot push out the date unless we are willing to sacrifice the timely association of learning materials. There is about a month worth of processing that needs to happen.

Q. It would be very helpful to have a live person to answer faculty questions as opposed to an FAQ page.  This would directly reduce the frustrations of the faculty.  Can you tell me who will use this information to plug faculty names into sections?  Will this be the Chairs or the Scheduling Team?

A. Faculty Chairs/Dean will use this information.

Q. The form does not articulate what modality each semester is open to, for instance we (the faculty) do not know whether Summer & Fall are mandatory online or not. If we are moving back to the standard schedule then the form does not articulate whether faculty want to teach a class online, hybrid or face-to-face.

A. The decision on modality has not been made and continues to be very fluid. For now, we are moving forward with a typical semester. I believe leadership is aware of the ambiguity.

Q. The form presents itself as if all classes are face-to-face and does not ask about modality at all. If we are going back to face-to-face then class caps need to be changed to reflect the amount of computer seats in our labs.

A. Space management occurs at a different stage of planning.

Q. Also, the form does not ask about 1st 8-week, 2nd 8-week and/or 16-week classes and does not have an option to choose hybrid or blended classes. I’m not sure how equitable this form can be when it’s incomplete and does not reflect all the unique modalities of classes we teach. In addition, the form does not ask questions about stacked classes or continuing education sections.

A. We have not added this information at this time. I have asked and it was stated that we cannot move forward with adding it lest we ignore the more than 600 faculty who have completed the form. For now, I suggest adding flex term information in the comments section.

Contract Opportunity for Faculty: ETS/College Board Seeks Content Experts

The enrollment decline and subsequent schedule management decisions have caused many Dallas College faculty to see a decrease to their extra service earnings.

DCCFA Secretary Jennifer Hudson-Allen suggests that Dallas College faculty might consider applying to perform a variety of tasks, on a contract basis, for the Educational Testing Service/College Board.

According to Dr. Hudson-Allen, “There is no conflict of interest with our current position as faculty, and the work is all remote. I have graded AP US History exams for a long time, and really enjoy the responses and learning about the questions given. I can say it has improved my own teaching to see what is expected in AP classes.”

The announcement from ETS follows:

Dear Current or Former AP Reader:

Educational Testing Service (ETS) is urgently seeking graduate students, teachers, professors, and other experts to find, write, or review content for a wide variety of Advanced Placement® (AP®) subject tests.

Content Specialists are needed for these AP subjects: Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science Principles, Environmental Science, European History, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Physics (including Electricity, Magnetism, & Mechanics), Political Science (U.S. Government & Politics, Comparative Government & Politics), Statistics, U.S. History, and World History.

Assignments may consist of finding appropriate published sources to include on a test, writing test content aligned to specific subject-area standards, or reviewing and revising test content. The work requires strong writing skills, attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, and receptiveness to constructive feedback. Content Specialists work both independently and as part of a team, and all work is done remotely/virtually.

Freelance Content Specialists will begin work in December by completing a series of workshop activities. These activities include watching on-demand videos, reviewing content specifications and acceptance criteria, and attending a live evening webinar. Assignments will be submitted on a regular basis between December and early March, with the possibility for continued work later in 2021. If interested in freelance work, please complete the following steps by end of day Friday, December 11, 2020:

1) Email your resume or curriculum vitae to Jillian Capers at jcapers@ets.org

November 16 Letter from DCCFA President Ryan Pettengill Distancing DCCFA from DC AAUP

NOTE: DCCFA President Ryan Pettengill sent this message on November 16 to the Board of Trustees and the Chancellor. It is republished here with the permission of President Pettengill.

Dear Chancellor May, Chair Flores, and Members of the Board of Trustees of Dallas College:

We, the faculty council leadership, understand that you recently received a letter from “Dallas College Chapter of the American Association of University Professors” (DCAAUP) dated Thursday, November 12, 2020.

On behalf of the Dallas Community College Faculty Association (DCCFA), we wish to convey that the DCCFA has no relationship with this local chapter of the AAUP. While some Dallas College faculty may maintain membership in both the AAUP and the DCCFA, no formal relationship exists.

We were not aware that DCAAUP was sending this letter and regret any confusion it may have caused.
